How to use vpb driver?

I can use osgviewer to view vpb_earth_bayarea.earth. That is oK!
However, when i use osgdem0.9.10 to gengerate  earth.ive (osgdem --splits 2 5 -t D:\osgEarth\data\world.tif -l 7 --tile-image-size 64 --geocentric - o D:\osgEarth\data\earth\earth.ive), i can't use osgearth to view it. In fact, i can open and view these .ive files in osg scene.

>> error messages are as follow:
[osgEarth::MapNode] Could't get tile for 0_0_0_0
[osgEarth::MapNode] Could't get tile for 0_0_1_0

>>My .earth file includes:

Re: How to use vpb driver?

Hi Jsing,

Nothing stands out immediately.  Set your OSG_NOTIFY_LEVEL=DEBUG and see if the tile filenames make sense.  Another thing to try is to add an explicit <profile>global-geodetic</profile> element to your heightfield and image names.

Thanks,

Jason

Re: How to use vpb driver?

I'm having a similar problem, the .ive I have can be viewed with osgviewer, but when I use an osgEarth file:

<map name="VPB demo" type="geocentric">

    <image name="truemarble" driver="vpb">

    </image>

    <heightfield name="dted0" driver="vpb">
       <url>/home/adam/current_issues/osg_lib/vpb_test/earth/earth.ive</url>
       <primary_split_level>2</primary_split_level>

Re: How to use vpb driver?

Hi Adam,

What happens if you just try to display the imagery from the VPB database?  So, try removing your heightfield element and see what happens.  that will help debug the issue.

Thanks

Jason

Re: How to use vpb driver?

Hi Adam,

This may be a stupid question, but did you build your VPB database with the --terrain option?  osgEarth only supports osgTerrain based VPB databases, not polygonal databases.

Thanks,

Jason

Re: How to use vpb driver?

Not stupid at all, I in fact did not.  If that is a requirement, you might want to add it to http://wush.net/trac/osgearth/wiki/TileSourcePluginVPB since that seems the be the place for VPB/osgEarth reference.

I added --terrain, rebuilt, works great!  Now I just need to get osgGIS to compile and work >_<

Re: How to use vpb driver?

Great to hear, I was banging my head on this one :)

I'll add that to the docs.  Let us know if you need help with osgGIS as well, we're the developers of that project as well.

Thanks!

Re: How to use vpb driver?

Got another one for you,
used:
osgdem -d ~/dted0 --geocentric --splits 5 11 -l 20 --terrain -o vpb/earth.ive -v 33
to create my heightfield model which looks great in osgviewer.
Using:

    <heightfield name="dted0" driver="vpb">
       <url>~/dted0/vpb/earth.ive</url>
       <primary_split_level>5</primary_split_level>
       <secondary_split_level>11</secondary_split_level>
       <profile>global-geodetic</profile>
    </heightfield>

causes the data to be skewed and in the wrong places.  I tried removing the profile line, and then half of the world looks good, and the other is missing with this error on the terminal:
[osgEarth::MapNode] Couldn't get tile for 0_0_1_0

any ideas?

Re: How to use vpb driver?

Unfortunately, I have to wait to hear from management if I can.

However, something I noticed might help.  Our terrain model is incomplete, which is leaving about a 20 degree circle at the top of the model, and about 60 degrees below the equator in osgviewer.

It looks like osgearth might be stretching the terrain to fill that space since when I use osgviewer on the .earth, there is skewed elevation at the north pole.

Re: How to use vpb driver?

Adam,

Interesting- yes, the incomplete globe may be your problem. The "global-geodetic" profile covers the entire globe, so it is not appropriate for your partial globe.

Never tried it for your case, but you could attempt to define your particular profile:

<profile>
    <srs>+proj=latlong +ellps=WGS84 +datum=WGS84</srs>
    <xmin>-180</xmin>
    <xmax>180</xmax>
    <ymin>-60</ymin>
    <ymax>70</ymax>
</profile>

...or whatever your numbers are. There's an slim chance it might work. Otherwise I would go back and see if you can just generate a full globe with osgdem. (Or better yet, skip osgdem and just use osgearth to render the globe in the first place.)

Re: How to use vpb driver?

I was hoping to do that actually, but since all our data is static it seemed like performance wise the pre-built database was the better option.

I will look into some of the caching options to see if I can speed things up.

Thanks again for all the help.

I'm having a similar problem.  I built my .ive in VS 2008 on a machine with CMake but I do not have access to at the moment.  How do I confirm the --terrain option is/was enabled?

Re: How to use vpb driver?

Hi,

The version of Visual Studio shouldn't matter.  The --terrain option is an option you pass into osgdem, not CMake.  To see if  your IVE is composed of TerrainTiles, you can probably just run:
osgconv myterrain.ive myterrain.osg

Then open up the .osg file in notepad and see if it contains osgTerrain::TerrainTile's (--terrain was on) or osg::Geode's (--terrain was off).

Thanks,

Jason
